The driver and car are available for transferring to birding sites around Da Lat over the next three days. Overnight in Dalat.

    -------------------------------------------------

+ Da Lat (Đà Lạt), located in the South Central Highlands of Vietnam, was originally the playground of the French who built villas in the clear mountain air to escape the heat and humidity of the coast and of what was then called Saigon (now) officially known as Ho Chi Minh City.

    Meals: Breakfast at hotel

    Accommodations at hotel

Activities for today: A full day of birding at Mount Lang Bian where the evergreen forests are home to many interesting species including some endemics. Key species to be found at Mount Lang Bian include Silver Pheasant, Indochinese Cuckooshrike, Eurasian Jay, Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Mugimaki Flycatcher, Cutia and Red Crossbill. This is also the place to see two of Vietnam’s sought after endemics, the Collared Laughingthrush and the Vietnamese Greenfinch. Mount Lang Bian is best avoided at weekends and holidays when it is a very popular destination for local tourists. Overnight in Dalat.

    ------------------------------------------------

+ Lang Biang Mountain: Located about 12km from Dalat center to the north in Lac Duong District, Lang Biang Mountain majestically appears as a miraculous evidence of the nature. Thanks to the height of 2169 m above sea level, Lang Biang Mountain is ranked as a national-level landscape. It has long been considered a symbol of Dalat city. Lang Biang Mountain hides itself the legend of a passionate love beyond the feudal rites. It is also referred as the "roof" of Lam Vien Plateau, the roof of Dalat, which is an ideal place for tourists to enjoy the feeling that can be found nowhere. It is a rendezvous of the large number of tourists who would like to longingly conquer, explore the unexpected and fulfill their adventure. Discovering Lang Biang Mountain is one of the most wonderful things to do in Dalat.

    Meals: Breakfast at hotel

    Accommodations: at hotel

    Transfer: Private vehicle

Activities for today: Tuyen Lam Lake, only 3km from the centre of town, is Da Lat’s other hotspot for birders. Take a boat to far side of the lake where a track leads through the pines to areas of remnant tropical evergreen forest. The rare and endemic Grey-crowned Crocias was re-discovered here a few years ago after not being seen for nearly 60 years. Other interesting species possible here include Slender-billed Oriole, Maroon Oriole, Rufous-backed Sibia, Black-hooded and White-cheeked Laughingthrush. Overnight in Dalat.

    ------------------------------------------------

+ Tuyen Lam lake (Paradise Lake), 6km to the South of Dalat, has the water surface of 350 ha. It was created by Tia stream – head water of Da Tam river. Nobody knows when and why it was called Tuyen Lam, but maybe because of the grandiose nature around it – stream and forest were close to each other. Tuyen stand for stream, Lam stands for forest. Tuyen Lam is a place for water and tree meeting each other.

  • Day 8: Dalat tour (B)
    Day 8: Dalat tour (B)

    Meals: Breakfast at hotel

    Accommodations: at hotel

    Transfer: Private vehicle

Activities for today: The Ta Nung Valley, around 15km from Da Lat, holds a few pockets of remnant evergreen forest where many of the Da Lat specialities can still be found including Grey-crowned Crocias, Black-hooded and White-cheeked Laughiingthrush, Grey-headed Parrotbill, Blue-winged Minla and Black-throated Sunbird. Overnight in Dalat.

    -------------------------------------------------

Ta Nung Valley: The forested slopes of this valley are probably the easiest place to see the crocias. It is about 8 KM from Dalat. If you take the road towards the old airport you will readily see some signposts to 'Ta Nung'. After passing the airport (which is hardly visible) there is an obvious Y junction where you should take the first road towards Ta Nung. Between the KM 5 and KM 6 marker you'll see the first jeep track to the left while It is signposted 'Di Nong Trai'. Walk this track down and pass some a gate and shack until you reach the valley after about 1 Km. The people hanging around did not bother us, although we noticed several snares and traps in the forest. We reached it easily by motortaxi from Dalat (15 min) and made arrangements to be picked up again later in the evening. Nights spent in one of the numerous hotels in Dalat.

On both our morning visits we invariably encountered a huge mixed feeding flock in the large trees in the open area just before the valley itself. There are several smaller trails which all can only be followed for a few hundred meters. Birding was good on all visits.
